Connected devices being used to spread DDoS, attackers from US and China

In 2015 more than eight malware families were emerged, making it a record year for IoT attacks

Internet of things (IoT) devices are increasingly being used to carry distributed denial of service or DDoS attacks, as per latest Symantec research. IoT devices, thanks to their lax security are being used to spread malware and create zombie networks, or botnets, unbeknownst to their device owners.

 

Most attacks on connected devices in the currect year, 2016 were carried by China and US. Also, Russia, Germany, Netherlands, Ukraine, UK, Vietnam, France and South Korea were amongst the top 10 countries originating such attacks.

During the investigation by Symantec, it was found that attackers tend to be less interested in the victim and the majority wish to hijack a device to add it to a botnet, most of which are used to perform distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

 

Most IoT malware targeted non-PC embedded devices including home networks, routers, modems, CCTV systems and industrial control systems etc.

 

As per the research, in 2015 more than eight malware families were emerged, making it a record year for IoT attacks.

 

Attacks originating from multiple IoT platforms simultaneously may be seen more often in the future, as the amount of the embedded devices connected to the Internet rises. The most common passwords IoT malware used to attempt to log into devices was, unsurprisingly, the combination of 'root' and 'admin', indicating that default passwords are frequently never changed.
